Our love affair with the Calabash has lasted from last summer and is in part due to the seductiveness of the prettiest of all Caribbean islands, Grenada, with itswarm people, fabulous beaches and lush countryside. However, the appeal ofthis particular hotel is due to the fact that it is extremely well run by its owner Leo Garbutt and General Manager Clive Barnes, with the focus on personal attention.
Whilst the Calabash is certainly a top class property, andarguably Grenada’s best, the emphasis is on understated elegance and Caribbean informality, which is quite addictive. The Rhodes food is outstandingand the setting of the restaurant at night is truly magical. All suites and the Rhodes restaurant and bar were completely restyled for the Calabash in 2005-6 by British designer Sally Harcourt, creating a luxurious and slightly more contemporary feel.
It is not often that one finds celebrity chefs of Gary Rhodes’ calibre involved in Caribbean hotels, but that is precisely the case at Calabash. At the ‘rhodes’restaurant, this Michelin-starred chef has instilled menus and standards thathave elevated an already highly rated restaurant into a cult venue, completewith magical setting, which generates unerringly rave reviews.
